Global Warming Solutions

Global warming solutions need to come from a combined collaboration and efforts from international, national and personal level to be fruitful.

Find out different approaches that can be taken at international, national and personal level to tackle the issue:

Global Warming Solutions at the International level - Discharge Reduction Agreement:

Global Warming and climate change is a global phenomenon that requires a combined international effort to tackle it.  The effort to reduce greenhouses gases I the atmosphere has started at the Rio Earth Summit in 1992, where various countries come together to set a target. The UN Framework on Climate Change (UNFCCC) had stated on 21 March 1994 and now it has a membership of 195 countries.

In the 2015 UN climate change conference in Paris, all the countries came together to agree on the new climate deal that included the goal of keeping global temperature increase “well below” two degrees Celsius. Out of 195 countries, 185 have announced measures to limit or reduce their greenhouse gas emissions by 2025 or 2030. But even if these commitments are fulfilled, temperatures would still be set to rise by around 3°C. (Data source: http://www.cop21.gouv.fr/en/what-was-cop21/). So, we need many more individual and collaborative efforts to keep global warming in check.

Global warming Solutions at the National Level:

Implementing Laws and Regulation:

Government of different countries should actively adopt greenhouse gas emission control strategies and regulate emission discharge limits and standards.  Government bodies should do this by proposing guidelines, emission standards and introducing penalties, fines and even imprisonment for the non-compliers.

Working Towards Green and Sustainable Transportation Sector:

Government can reduce greenhouse gas emission by greening their transportation sector. They can do it by improving and encouraging public transportation; introducing renewable and low-carbon fuels as well as investing in energy efficient technologies.

Encouraging Renewable Energy Sector:

Governments should encourage growth and development of renewable energy sector at the national level. Government subsidies and aids should be available for different renewable energy generation projects like solar, wind, biomass energy etc.

Investing in Energy Efficient Low- Carbon Technologies:

Energy efficient technologies in our day to day life can conserve a significant amount of energy and prevent associate greenhouse emission to the atmosphere.  Government should invest in research and development of low emission and highly efficient technologies that will make renewable energy use more accessible, easier and affordable. Example of such technologies that require attentions are solar battery storage capacity, new material for solar cell etc.

Reducing Deforestation and Forest Degradation:

Trees acts as carbon sink by taking up carbon dioxide but without them it is left as it in the atmosphere. So, one major way to fight global warming is to prevent deforestation and forest degradation.

Creating Awareness:

Government should take the lead for creating public awareness against global warming and greenhouse gas emission. They can do it through seminars, publications, multi-media advertisements etc.

Good Public transportation system can cut down vehicle related emissions!

Global warming Solutions at the Personal Level:

Individual level we can also be aware and take responsibility of our actions for reducing global warming. Examples of some actions that can help us reducing global warming are:

  • Choosing energy efficient technologies and appliances at home and offices.
  • Use public transportation as often as feasible.
  • Cut down energy usage at home when possible.
  • Eating meat-free meal as live stocks are very resource intensive to raise.
  • Drive a fuel-efficient vehicle and keep it well-maintained.
  • Reduce and reuse waste as much as possible to avoid them going to landfills and generating greenhouse gases.
